La Tournée le Lait from November 2009 to May 2010

Since November 2009, La Tournée le Lait has been visiting elementary schools in the province to motivate young people to adopt a healthier lifestyle and to enter the friendly contest which takes place in May.

In order for them to experience something they would never forget, a spectacular caravan was designed. It is the nerve centre of the operation and a true playground for children. It features 16 Devinci exercise bikes, which are all equipped with computers and Tacx virtual cycling systems for race simulation.

Each school visit includes exercise periods in the caravan, as well as workshops on healthy nutrition developed by Extenso, Université de Montréal’s reference centre in human nutrition . The purpose is to teach as least one key concept in healthy eating to children. The young students also receive a fun lunchbox which is made of recycled cardboard that they must put together by themselves and features the composition of a healthy meal.

The second caravan, which will hit the road in February 2010, can accommodate 30 students at a time. On the second floor, children will be able to go wild in an environment similar to that of the first caravan (16 exercise bikes equipped with an ergotrainer system and computers). On the first floor, children will have fun as they learn the basics of healthy eating with Eat Better, a one-of-a-kind workshop that introduces them to the fascinating world of food and nutrition. This innovative activity, which is led by a nutritionist, is presented as an interactive video game featuring real-life situations through which children learn while having fun.

The nutrition workshop, which is highly engaging, will be adapted according to the children’s age. Two different activities will thus be available: one for first- to third-grade students (age 6 to 9), and one for fourth- to sixth-grade students (age 10 to 12).

The grand contest in schools in May 2010

Presented by in collaboration with

After following La Tournée le Lait and the events of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie for a whole year, children can take part in a friendly contest at their school. All elementary schools across Quebec may enter. The contest is aimed at rewarding students who make the strongest commitment to becoming more physically active.

How to participate:

  • Children and their families must do 15-minute sessions of physical activity (or energy cubes), 7 days a week for a month.
  • Each session earns them one point. The more active they are, the more points they accumulate.
  • These points are entered on the official website of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie, LeveToietBouge.com, by physical education teachers or the person in charge. Parents are responsible for signing their children’s report confirming the number of points to be approved by the person in charge at the school.
  • At the end of the month, the schools that were the most active win a pass for the great party at the Olympic Stadium in Montréal.

There will be one winning school in each of Quebec’s 16 administrative regions, for a total of around 5,000 students.

Children can have fun monitoring their school’s progress on LeveToietBouge.com, comparing their performance with that of other schools in their region and encouraging one another to improve in order to win the grand prize. They can also view the Olympic Stadium fill up with energy cubes (one cube corresponds to one 15-minute session of physical activity). If a cube has a volume of one metre by one metre, a total of 1,866,000 energy cubes fit inside the Olympic Stadium. This clever operation was developed by the great mathematician and renowned sportsman Jean-Marie De Koninck. Look as children fill more than one up over the month of May!

The Grand Prize event and the finale of the 1,000-km marathon in Montréal in June 2010

On June 19, about 5,000 students from the winning schools will be expected in Montréal for a great two-day celebration in the Olympic Stadium. Transportation to and from Montréal will be ensured by the Association des transporteurs écoliers du Québec (the Quebec association of school transport).

The children’s arrival in Montréal will coincide with the finale of the 1,000 km event, the cycling marathon whose aim is to mark a 60-hour pause to promote the importance of adopting healthy life habits. The main media in Quebec will be present to capture this magical moment.

Games, a concert, a dinner and accommodation for the night will be organized for students. They will then return home with great memories.
